Avatar the Movie & the Aircraft they used

I am sure that 90% of you have seen the new movie which has also received a whole string of awards. What facinated me was the computer generated graphics and since I am an aviation ethusiast more so the aircraft that were used in the movie. It is some very interesting craft but if you take into consideration that the movie plays off in 2150's they aren't much evolved from what you get today. They looked very real indeed and had a lot of detail on them. They actually looked very nice

I must say that they look heavily armoured and that they are not build out of aviation aluminium. Maybe that is some kind of new ultra light super hard armoured substance. The choppers has enourmous air intakes and two rotors which are protected by some rotor guards. I guess that they are specifically for flying in the dense forest.

You will notice that the rotors also tilt independately and it seems that it makes the Rotor Craft more manueverable, but my common sense tells me differently. Maybe I am wrong, and that it will actually make out a great design.

I am not very clued up in rotor craft and maybe there are some of you chopper specialists out there that might know if that helicopter might become a reality one day.

Post us your comments on the aircraft used in this movie.

  1. the most revolutionary things that this design has that that other Ducted fan V/Stol's don't have in the Counter rotating blades (2 blades in each housing rotating opp directions) this is said to generate better lift due to the fact that the air will come out from the Duct straighter rather then in a cork screw.

Am doing some models at the moment

  2. I like my aircraft both planes and helicopters and to my point of view I think that the Scorpion aircraft in the movie are kinda of the same design as the US militarys V-22 Osprey jst well better I would really like to c this kind of aircraft in the future so every1 keep an eye on the americans as they are more likely to have it 1st.

  4. These reminds me of Halo Reach's Falcon and Tiberium Wars' Orca aircrafts :)
I'm sure scientists and engineers are already working on the designs. Tilt-rotors have advantages over regular helicopters but there appears to be several hindrances to building such aircraft that could match the current purposes and capabilities being supplied by helies..
But these aircraft are not impossible... it just takes a matter of time before we will see some in our airspace :D

  5. The plural of aircraft is aircraft, not aircrafts.

  6. If you read the backstory of Avatar, the rotorcraft used in the film are actually from about circa 2070. It is a lot cheaper for the RDA (Resources Development Administration) to send them out to Pandora as opposed to sending brand-new aircraft.

I guess you could say it would be like shipping F-16s with modern avionics out to a foreign planet if they can do the required job just fine as opposed to F-22s.
